Bulford Bridge Public Meeting

Durrington Town Council’s Special meeting held on 2nd September was a great success. On a wet night over 75 people attended Durrington Village Hall, some from Bulford and surrounding areas.

The independent presentation by Cllr Wright was well received and he covered all the salient points about the Bridge replacement and Wiltshire Council’s options 1, 2, and 3
(To view Cllr Wright’s presentation click here)

Concerns were voiced over the lack of consultation by Wiltshire Council (why were the schools, doctors, MOD and public bodies not advised, consulted or considered?)

The A3028 was also discussed and it was pointed out that Telegraph Hill in Bulford was in fact a B road and a weight restriction should be in place to stop large HGV’s from using it. Cllr Wright agreed to urgently pursue this.

Many questions were asked and answered; the debate was interesting and fruitful and the peoples OPTION 4 was conceived. This option was, on the night, the option that the majority of people supported and it was seen as a good idea that should be explored in more detail.

Option 4
Do not permanently close the Bridge for 7.5 months and use the principle of Options 2 or 3 by providing a temp single carriageway and pedestrian footway. Set up a one way single lane system from Bulford into Durrington from East to West. The route from Durrington to Bulford will be via the A303 (note:- this route is not too bad even at congested times and is certainly not like the massive congestion that is experienced when travelling from Bulford to Durrington via the A303)

This will provide the following perceived benefits:

No delays at Bulford Bridge (there will be no traffic control and less disruption to residents living close to the bridge)
· Easy access into Durrington will reduce the loss of customers for the local businesses.
· No disruption to the morning school run.
· Remove, over a longer timeframe, the large HGV Bulford to Durrington rat run.
· No extra congested to the Westbound section of the A303.
· Reduced costs on Option 2 and 3.

The public were insistent that as part of any option, it was important the Countess Roundabout have the original hatch line markings replaced, because the newer ‘Keep Clear’ markings just don’t work. Prioritisation for people entering the roundabout and travelling to Bulford should be considered.

Next steps.

Wiltshire Councillor Graham Wright agreed to objectively represent the views of the people at the Area Board meeting next Tuesday, 8th Sept, 7pm at Antrobus House in Amesbury. David Healing will formally represent the Durrington Town Council. Any questions that local residents want to ask the Area Board need to be sent to Graham Wright by Monday morning at the latest please.

The meeting requested that the e-mail addresses of the Amesbury area board members be attached to this briefing.
