Durrington Otter Project

Members of the Durrington Town Council Recreation & Amenity Committee & Conservation Group met recently on a chilly morning to rebuild the otter holt which is sited in a quiet secluded location close to the Durrington River Park. The original structure had fallen into disrepair so the task force of eager beavers or should that read eager otters got to work re-arranging what was basically a pile of logs into a new desirable residence for these extremely shy & elusive mammals.

The aim was to provide a number of interconnecting chambers which are dark and reasonably dry backing onto the waters edge. The team used fallen branches to lie across the logs to form a roof & finished the job off by piling brashings on the top of the structure to fill any gaps & make the compound more water resistant. After a couple of hours the task was completed albeit a few of the helpers had developed webbed feet due to the marshy nature of the terrain!!

Although there is no evidence of otters ever having used this artificial structure it is hoped that one it will be visited by an otter as their numbers are increasing & are present on the River Avon. These creatures are extremely shy & reclusive & during the hours of daylight lie up in dense scrub. We now have a network of otter Holts along the Avon Valley so maybe one day they may decide to give the Durrington site a visit.

Civil Service Retirement Fellowship have a Great New Year Meeting
76 Members enjoyed a great afternoon at Durrington Village Hall on the 17th January.

There were quizzes, songs, a duet by Ruth and Gordon Stewart and an interpretation of ‘A Little Old lady’ by Jeannie Clift. The hilarious group game ‘Dress the Model’ caused much laughter and the picture shows the marvellous use of odds and ends of paper, string and gift decorations. This culminated in a finger buffet provided by the members and committee. Good Neighbour Coordinator, Graham Wright said “it’s great to see so many people enjoying themselves and it’s a real treat to be invited as their guest”

Next meeting is the AGM on the 21st February at 2.30pm in Durrington Village Hall
