On Boxing Day 2008 in Durrington, over 200 people braved the cold to go and watch a football match. The football match was organised by Mr Lee Hutchinson who has had testicular cancer twice now. He wanted to raise money and awareness for all male cancers and organised this event in aid of Everyman Cancer Research.
The teams were the old boys of Durrington managed by Mr Ian Hunt against the current young boys team managed by Mr Mick Tyler. It started well with each team playing by the rules. The first half finished with only 1 goal being scored which was for the old boys by Rodney Flint and a couple of yellow cards.
The old boys were struggling in the second half so much, so that they put on extra players so they had 14 players on the pitch. There came four goals for the young boys in the last 45 mins by Smulls, Smithies, Marc Roberts and a absolute screamer from the edge of the area by Gav Cooley. The old boys got one back from Paul Apps but it was not enough in the end and the full time score was 4 - 2. The man of the match went to Clive “chunky” Phillips the goalkeeper for the old boys. He had done some amazing saving including a penalty save what the England goalkeeper would be proud of.
After the match, the Stonehenge Snooker Centre opened for the buffet, raffle and auction. There were some very good prizes included. Thank you to all the companies that donated especially to the General Manager of the Red Lion Hotel for their very special prize.
It was a very good day which lots of people turned up to and in all raised over 2 thousand pounds for the charity.
